What type of Marquee Hire do I need?

All of our Marquee’s are modular in length and are therefore categorized by type and width. Traditional marquee hire‘s are usually in 10 ft or 20 ft modules (3 or 6m), frames are more often measured in metric sizes and are in modules of 3m or 5m.

Traditional Marquee’s

Traditional marquees go under a number of names, pole tents, soft tops, (Not to be confused with “Big Tops” or Circus Tents), but they all have one thing in common in that the main structural element is the cover itself. Most traditional marquees now use the more popular PVC coating. Whilst traditional marquees can be as wide as 120 feet, we recommend you switch to clear span aluminium structures for widths above 40 or 50 feet (12 or 15 metres). Being relatively inexpensive and easy to erect, traditional tents are a popular marquee hire chosen for private events like weddings and surprise birthday parties etc.

Frame Marquee’s

Frame marquees, where a semi rigid frame provides the structural stability, mostly use synthetic fabrics as a covering. Frames will be of box section aluminium, as most modern frames are these days. This type are often referred to as “Clear span” structures which can be in widths up to 50m with no intermediate pole supports (Hence the name “Clear span”. The uninterrupted internal space of frame structures makes them very popular for a wide variety of events from private events to large corporate events.

Because they have a solid frame this type of marquee can accept a higher level of accessories, such as doors, windows, rigid side panels and sophisticated flooring systems. Consequently the move, of late, has been to an ever increasing standard of finish and internal comfort, so much so that many guests do not realise that they are actually in a “marquee”. This level of sophistication, together with their structural stability has encouraged the recent trend to extend the traditional marquee season beyond the late summer into the winter and, indeed, MGN events now erect marquees all year round.

A Marquee size guide for events

Size is important!

Too many people crammed into a small place is both uncomfortable and unsafe, conversely too large a space can make your event seem empty. Use our rough guide for approximations on what size marquee hire you might require for your event.

Don’t forget: You need to add space for a stage, dance floor, DJ, catering, reception, cloaks, toilets etc. Try to keep the length of the marquee to no more than 3 times the width to ensure maximum stability and to avoid a “tunnel” effect.

Points to consider when hiring a Marquee:

  • Confirm guest numbers
  • Confirm delivery/completion and dismantle dates
  • Confirm furniture type and quantities (Allow for catering)
  • Agree internal layout of marquee (dance floor, entrances etc.)
  • Agree colours and style of interior decoration (samples to colour match)
  • Confirm payment terms (deposit etc.)

Safety:

  • MGN events will always conduct a site visit to check the health and safety requirements for your Marquee Hire:
  • Note the position of underground and overhead services (e.g. drains, gas pipes, etc)
  • Ensure you power supply is adequate, (Do not worry if not, we can hire generators)

General:

  • Inform MGN events if you need the marquee hire in place prior to the eve of the event
  • Stagger the arrival of the various contractors, e.g. caterers are unable to set up before the roof lining is in place.
  • Beware of confusion between metric and imperial marquee hire measurements
  • Update MGN events of changes to guest numbers, dates etc. prior to the event.

A guide for public Marquee hire events

However we have listed some of the key points to assist you in the planning and operation of your event. The list gives a brief outline of the points to consider when hiring a marquee.

Confirm with MGN events:

  • Dates for erection and dismantling of Marquee
  • Position of underground and overhead services
  • Marquee plan of structures showing entrances and fire exits
  • Adjacent structures showing entrances and fire exits
  • Availability of mains services
  • General and emergency lighting
  • Notify MGN events of any special requirements well before Marquee erection date

Public safety considerations:

  • Access for the public
  • Access for emergency vehicles and equipment
  • Check occupancy levels/number of fire exits required
  • Arrange for rubbish to be cleared regularly
  • Fire equipment

Arrange with authorities:

  • Obtain license from local authority (where appropriate)
  • Insurance – public liability and loss or damage to equipment
  • Notify local police where appropriate
  • AA/RAC signs

Winter Months/Exceptional sites:

  • Additional measures need to be considered for the planning of your Marquee event in winter months or on exceptional sites:
  • Necessity of a controlled heating system inside the marquee
  • Necessity of on-site maintenance during the marquee event

General:

  • Toilet arrangements
  • On site security
  • Heating
