Turning 18 is a milestone that marks a real moment of transition, and for our client and her family, this celebration needed to feel grown-up, confident and genuinely special.

With 120 guests attending their home in Sevenoaks, Kent, the brief wasn’t just about creating something beautiful, but about designing an experience that felt welcoming for all ages. The aim was to create an 18th birthday party in a maruqee which struck a careful balance between elegance and energy, ensuring the party felt polished and stylish early in the evening, while still allowing it to evolve naturally into a high-impact celebration as the night unfolded.

For this particular 18th birthday party balloons had to feature in a big way, the birthday girl loves them!

The Solution

Our marquee company worked their magic to build a fantastic marquee in a sloping field, and the resulting decked area with steps cleverly created an impressive entrance as guests approached via a lit avenue of high hedges.

Our design approach focused on restraint and balance. A crisp white base palette created a sense of calm and sophistication, allowing key features to shine without overwhelming the space. Balloon installations were treated as sculptural elements for this 18th birthday party in a marquee rather than simple decoration, carefully positioned to frame the space and add scale while maintaining an elegant feel. A white starlit dance floor was surrounded by acrylic round tables and chairs.

Combined with the soft glow of uplighting and reflective acrylic furniture, the result was a marquee interior that felt light, refined and intentionally designed, perfectly suited to a modern 18th birthday celebration.

The tables themselves were subtly uplit, creating a soft, ethereal glow that lifted the entire space and gave the marquee a calm, refined atmosphere during the early part of the evening. For the drinks reception and dinner, all lighting was kept deliberately white, allowing the styling, textures and finishes to take centre stage and giving the space a clean, elegant feel.

And then there were the balloons. This wasn’t a handful of clusters dotted around the room, but carefully designed balloon installations used as a defining feature of the décor. Sculptural in scale and thoughtfully positioned, they added height, movement and a real sense of occasion, delivering visual impact while still complementing the overall elegance of the marquee.

Dinner was followed by speeches and a very big surprise. During the welcome drinks reception, guests had been entertained by a saxophonist and keyboard player. What the birthday girl wasn’t expecting was that, at the cue of ‘let’s party’ an eight-piece band would be revealed behind the curtained fake end of the marquee!

With the band instantly belting out songs that filled the dance floor of this 18th birthday party in a marquee, the lighting design changed dramatically. We introduced colour, movement and lasers, which enhanced the party atmosphere and saw the marquee interior transform effortlessly from formal dining area to a cool club.

The Result

The impact of the evening was immediate and memorable. The reveal of the live band created a genuine moment of surprise, transforming the atmosphere and setting the tone for the rest of the night. As the lighting shifted and the dancefloor filled, the marquee took on a completely new energy, with guests of all ages joining in and staying well into the evening. For the birthday girl, it was an unforgettable celebration that felt personal, exciting and confidently her own. For her family, it was a moment to step back and enjoy seeing everything come together exactly as they had hoped.
