The objective

When a global media company brought its B2B businesses together for their inaugural sales kick off event under one new enterprise brand, it inherited a sales team that had never worked as one. Sellers were spread across London, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Dubai, Singapore, Tokyo, Beijing and Hong Kong. They carried different histories, different products and, in places, different clients who were being approached by more than one team at once.

The leadership team wanted a first Sales Kick Off that would do real work. The commercial goals were clear: more referrals and cross-sells between business units, more joint deals, and fewer client conflicts from uncoordinated outreach. Underneath those sat a cultural one. This new organisation needed a shared identity, a high-energy sales room feel and, in the client’s own words, a return of their once renowned “swagger”.

Three days in a European city would not deliver that on its own. This first Sales Kick Off event in nearly 10 years had to change how people thought about each other and their accounts, and ultimately how they behavioured as a result. Cruicially, it had to do so within a fixed budget for a global audience at the start of peak season.

The brief

Design and deliver a three-day Sales Kick Off in a European destination for a global team. Make it feel premium and seamless, give leadership a stage worthy of a launch, and build in the connection and behaviour change the business needed. Do it within budget and measure the impact.

What we did

We started with strategy, not logistics

Before a venue was discussed, we ran a strategic planning workshop with the client’s leadership team. Using belief and behaviour mapping and other recognised frameworks, we worked through what the sales organisation needed to believe about itself, what behaviours would follow, and which moments across the three days would make those behaviours stick. From that session came defined event objectives, agreed measures of success and one overarching Creative Concept: One Team.

That idea did the heavy lifting from then on. The client built their agenda around it, with sessions titled One Team, One Customer, One Story and One Enterprise, each led by an internal leader. Our job was to design an experience that made the theme feel true from the moment people landed.

We chose the destination to work harder for the budget

Early June is expensive almost everywhere in Europe but we didn’t let this deter us. Our starting point was to use our insights from the Strategy Workshops and ensure the locations and venues we were proposing fitted not only the Creative Concept but felt aligned to our client’s brand. We costed two destinations in full, Malta and Budapest, and advised on which would deliver more for the same money at that time of year. Budapest won on value, character and connectivity for a long-haul audience. The cities powerful blend of rich history and intellectual heritage, set against a backdrop of modern ambition provided an inspiring setting for a global team coming together to honour its legacy while shaping a more connected, forward-thinking future.

The Corinthia gave us conference, gala dinner and 95 bedrooms under one roof. No transfers on the main day, no time lost, and a 19th-century ballroom that no delegate would mistake for a conference room.

We negotiated reduced rates on ballroom set-up, entertainment and the DJ, and handled visa support letters for delegates travelling from Asia and the Middle East.

We made the theme tangible

Every delegate arrived to a message on their bathroom mirror: What’s your one ambition for the event? It set the tone before anyone had picked up a lanyard.

While the group enjoyed their first evening on a river cruise along the River Danube, a bespoke Rubik’s Cube branded with the One Team identity was placed in every room as a gift. A small nod to Hungary, where the puzzle was invented, and a reminder that a solution only works when every side lines up. The Rubik’s Cube was also symbolic throughout the whole event tieing the location, theme and brand identity together.

At the gala dinner, each place was marked with a laser-etched keyring in 100% recycled acrylic, carrying the event theme and doubling as a keepsake to take home. Table talkers on the boat asked delegates for one thing colleagues would be surprised to learn about them. Simple prompts, but on a night when people from nine offices were meeting for the first time, they did their job.

MGN built three very different days into one seamless programme

Day one was about arrival and connection. Delegates were met, checked in and, by early evening, on board a private boat for a three-hour cruise on the Danube. Three Hungarian Rubik’s Cube masters mingled on deck during the welcome hour, a live BBQ ran on the terrace, and the bar poured nine Hungarian wines chosen to show off the country. Senior leaders flying in late were brought straight from the airport to the pier with luggage handled and a drink waiting.

Day two was the core SKO conference, and the room had to move with it. We reset the Grand Ballroom repeatedly between plenary, fireside interview, panel and workshop formats, with a 6m x 4m LED wall, full lighting and sound, and ten cabaret tables that became workshop stations for a One Team Lego challenge after lunch. Dress code: Rock Your Red, in the client’s brand colour.

At 5.15pm the conference closed. By 7.15pm the same room was a gala dinner: ten tables dressed in white linen with red florals and gold lamps, a Hungarian folk dance company opening the evening, an awards moment for the year’s top performers in front of the LED wall, then a DJ and karaoke until half past midnight.

Day three brought the group back into the ballroom, reset overnight, for two final workshops, a commitments session and a close from the President. Seven staggered departure waves then moved 95 people to the airport between 5.30am and 3.30pm.

Three MGN team members onsite, one expert local partner from our global network, and a five-day running order timed to the minute. The client’s team saw the outcome. They did not see the work.

The results

Because measurement was built in from the start for this Sales Kick off event, we can say what changed rather than simply how it felt. Delegates completed the same survey before and immediately after the event, scoring 13 statements about alignment, understanding and collaboration on a five-point scale.

19% uplift across the client-facing team. The average score among sellers and account teams moved from 3.9 to 4.6 out of 5.

The biggest shifts landed where the business needed them. Understanding of what colleagues in other business units actually sell rose 22%, from the lowest score in the pre-event survey to one of the highest. Understanding of how “One Team, One Client” translates into everyday behaviour rose 21%. Alignment with the direction of the business rose 20%.

A team that left ready to sell. Motivation and energy for the year ahead scored 4.9 out of 5. Feeling more connected to colleagues across the business, understanding how their role drives enterprise growth, and being more likely to collaborate across units all scored 4.8.

Commitments, not compliments. Every delegate was asked for one behaviour they would change. The answers included enterprise-wide account plans for the ten most promising accounts in one region, leaders committing to a weekly check on cross-unit activity, and sellers pledging to open every client conversation with the full enterprise proposition. Before the event, only around a third of the team collaborated with other business units weekly. That baseline is now measured, and it is the number the next Kick Off will be judged against. Leadership went straight into planning the next edition in Asia.

What makes a successful Sales Kick Off event?

A successful Sales Kick Off event starts with a clear understanding of what the business needs to achieve. For this global sales team, that meant improving collaboration between business units, strengthening understanding of the wider proposition and giving people a shared direction for the year ahead. The event combined leadership communication with practical workshops, networking and team activities, while careful planning ensured the experience worked across four continents. Measuring alignment and collaboration before and after the event also gave the client a clearer picture of its impact.

Sales Kick Off Event FAQs

1. What is a Sales Kick Off event?

A Sales Kick Off event brings a sales organisation together at the start of a new business cycle to align teams around strategy, priorities and commercial objectives. A well-designed Sales Kick Off can combine leadership communication, sales enablement, collaboration and team building to help turn business strategy into action.

2. How can a Sales Kick Off improve sales team alignment?

A Sales Kick Off can improve alignment by bringing teams from different business units and locations together around shared objectives. Workshops, cross-functional sessions and collaborative activities can help salespeople understand each other's products, identify opportunities to work together and establish practical behaviours for the year ahead.

3. How do you measure the success of a Sales Kick Off event?

Success can be measured through pre- and post-event surveys, engagement scores, participation in workshops, behavioural commitments and business-specific measures such as collaboration between teams. In this case, the client recorded a 19% uplift in alignment, understanding and collaboration among the client-facing team.

4. Can a Sales Kick Off event support cross-selling and collaboration?

Yes. A Sales Kick Off can be designed specifically to encourage collaboration between business units by giving teams time to understand each other's products, customers and capabilities. Practical workshops, account-planning exercises and commitments sessions can help turn the event into a catalyst for cross-selling and joint opportunities.

5. What should a global Sales Kick Off event include?

A global Sales Kick Off should balance strategic communication with practical collaboration and relationship building. Depending on the objectives, this might include leadership sessions, workshops, team-building activities, networking, entertainment and opportunities for delegates to develop clear commitments for the year ahead. Strong logistics are also essential when bringing teams together from multiple countries.
