The Brief
For their daughter’s 21st birthday, our client wanted to create the kind of elegant at-home celebration you would expect to see tucked away in the pages of a luxury lifestyle magazine. Set within the grounds of their beautiful Buckinghamshire home, the brief was to transform a marquee into a glamorous winter party space for 80 close friends and family, inspired by the eclectic charm and playful sophistication of Sketch in Mayfair.
Think layered textures, statement lighting, incredible food and a warm, buzzing atmosphere that felt more like an exclusive private members’ club than a traditional marquee party. With the celebration taking place in December, every detail also needed to feel cosy, welcoming and effortlessly polished for guests throughout the evening. The MGN team were appointed to design and deliver a completely bespoke marquee experience that balanced style, comfort and seamless luxury entertaining from start to finish.
The Solution
With the marquee acting as a completely blank canvas, we were able to design a luxury 21st birthday party that felt deeply personal to the family, whilst still delivering the wow-factor they wanted for their guests. One of the biggest questions families often ask when planning a marquee party at home is how to make it feel special enough for such a milestone birthday, without losing the warmth and intimacy that comes with hosting at a private residence. For this celebration, we focused on creating an experience that felt stylish, immersive and effortlessly welcoming from the moment guests arrived.
Taking inspiration from the playful interiors of Sketch London, we transformed the family’s Buckinghamshire garden into a vibrant private party venue filled with dramatic florals, layered lighting and elegant styling details. We lined the marquee in black draping to create warmth and atmosphere on a cold December evening, before introducing oversized botanical wall panels, floral installations and colourful production lighting to bring energy and personality into the space.
Because many clients searching for luxury party planners or marquee party specialists are often concerned about how a winter garden party will actually feel for guests, we paid particular attention to comfort and flow throughout the evening. We designed the layout to feel intimate and social, ensuring guests could move naturally between drinks, dining and dancing whilst remaining warm and comfortable despite the time of year.
Outside, we used architectural lighting to softly illuminate the family home and gardens, creating a sense of occasion before guests had even stepped inside the marquee. We designed a lit walkway leading guests towards the entrance, where they were welcomed with champagne, cocktails and beautifully presented canapés before sitting down for an elegant three-course dinner.
As the evening evolved, we shifted the atmosphere from refined dinner party to lively celebration, with our DJ keeping the dancefloor full well into the night. For the birthday girl, her family and friends staying overnight, we also arranged a relaxed breakfast gathering the following morning, allowing everyone to continue celebrating together in a more personal setting.
